Battery Codes: JIS, DIN and BCI Group Sizes

Car battery codes come in three systems: BCI group sizes used in North America, DIN/EN case codes from Europe, and JIS codes from Japan. Owner's manuals print whichever system the maker uses, so a Toyota manual may say LN3 while the battery shop asks for a group number.

Decoding a JIS code

A JIS code such as 55D23L has four parts. Using this site's decoder on 55D23L: capacity rank 55, case class D, nominal length 23 cm, and the positive terminal on the left when you face the terminals. BCI's chart lists group 35 as the best fit, a case of 230 × 175 × 225 mm.

JIS code BCI best fit BCI case (mm)
55D23L 35 230 × 175 × 225
55D23R 25 230 × 175 × 225
48D26R 24 260 × 173 × 225
46B24L 51R 238 × 129 × 223

Decoding a DIN/EN case code

DIN codes (H5, H6, H7) and EN codes (LN2, LN3, LN4) describe the same European case family. BCI maps them as follows:

DIN / EN BCI best fit
H5 / LN2 47 and 97R
H6 / LN3 48, 98R and 148
H7 / LN4 94R
H8 / LN5 49

When BCI lists two groups for one case, they differ in terminal side or hold-down ledge, so check the old battery before you choose. Toyota manuals print these case codes as the minimum size to use; the Toyota RAV4 years are a good example.

Ford's Motorcraft codes

Ford prints battery part numbers such as BXT-65 or BAGM-48H6-760. The number after the prefix is the BCI group (65, or 48 here), followed by a DIN code and a cold cranking amp rating. The group 65 and group 48 pages list the Ford models whose manuals print them.

Check the fit

The code tells you the case; the tray decides what fits. Measure the space and use the tray fit checker to list every group that fits, then match the battery codes to the cold cranking amps on the old label.
